I can relate to this one as I’ve spent many nights and mornings trapped in those dungeons of near madness.
Not that it’ll help in your case, but I often find relief by listening to a mix of Impressionistic piano works with some Satie, Phillip Glass and Terry Riley mixed in there. At other times, I play a recording of surf sounds that I recorded many years ago on the Big Sur coast. I’ve found too many of the commercially available recordings have musical instruments barging into the nature sounds and that drives me crazy! I’ve found audiobooks with headphones to be a great distraction as well!
When all that fails, I’ll resort to more unhealthy interventions.
I’m no stranger to insomnia. I think those of us creators/writers and visionaries like yourself suffer this from time to time. It’s sort of a shock to the brain to get to the next level of creativity. On another note who am I kidding? It sucks. I’ve not been right since Daylight Savings Time. Feel
Like I have a steel guitar string wrapped around my head. Wishing you restful sleep.
John Coltrane’s meditations album at 4am could save our souls.
4:20? Really, Bret? That's always a good time to be awake.
Great piece Bret!

Oiy! Never had it that bad, but I chemically cheat before it gets to that stage. Sorry you are suffering with that.
Sounds dreadful, though I enjoy, as always, your descriptions!

Here's my batch of unsolicited advice:
Go on walkabout.
Seriously.
Walk until you can't walk anymore.
Being outside is imperative for this solution.
The Lizard Brain has been overwhelmed with modern Life and also feels underappreciated.
This is why it is fighting for your attention.
It needs to rediscover its connection to the ancestors.
Walkabout is exercise, which means it causes the brain to create all of those cool chemicals that make us feel human again.
It's low stress to the body, so it's good for anyone who is able to walk.
The sooner you feel human again, the sooner you'll go to sleep.
All the best.
