I’m glad you waited a week to share your thoughts on Sonny. I have been overwhelmed by the international outpouring following his death. This doesn’t typically happen for folks who live that long. They tend to be less well remembered. There seems to be a consensus that a very big and heavy door has been closed.
One of my first thoughts was of you when I first heard the news. I knew how hard you would take Sonny's passing because of how important his music and friendship were. Lovely tribute. Thank you. Long Live Sonny Rollins!
(one minor note...I think the video clip is probably more like 1997 than 1977)
Thank you for sharing this, Bret. For several years now, Sonny has been a musical hero of mine and a great inspiration. I saw him perform many times, from my college years in the 90s in Ann Arbor, to Orchestra Hall in Detroit in the 00s, and even once at Olympia Theater in Paris. I once had the opportunity to meet him, as well. I am very sad that he is gone, but grateful for the incredible musical legacy he has left us.
Keep pursuing those muses, Bret. Profoundest condolences for your loss...
Brest wishes on your next chapter amigo.
