My friend painted a large piece, all in the gray scale, of about 50 heads, none of which were recognizable, but all human males and females. He titled it The Committee. I knew him well enough to know exactly what he was painting about. Yours is a jury, David has his committee, I have an unorganized batch of bat-faced critics that pop up at will. Having just turned 80, I'm pleased to say,, less and less frequently. Segue: my best dog, Sam, was a fence fighter, as well as an actual scrapper. Whenever another dog passed by our fenced yard, Sam was right on him. Whenever we passed a yard with another fence fighter they would go at it - the dog could have died years ago, but Sam remembered and would growl a challenge hoping for a quick bark and snarl. I've been having arguments with people in my head for years. Living humans, ghosts, people off the street, make believe characters. Sam died. I'm aging. The fighting is no longer that interesting. So, Bret, I get what you're writing about.

This was an important contribution to those of us who need reminding how much time and energy we use living in our heads, rehashing old transgressions against us for example. There’s a reason that holding a grudge is one of the “14 slanders” described by renegade Buddhist priest Nichiren; in essence it’s a slander against one’s own life. Holding a grudge doesn’t really affect the one who is the subject of the grudge— only ourselves, eating away from within, living in our heads, taking up space and not cleaning up after itself. Eliminating a grudge seems impossible. But your courtroom exploration makes it easier for us to identify our own karmic tendencies and address them— an important step in transformation. I’ll share this, so thank you!

Bret that was wonderfully descriptive and eloquent in how we relate, others opinions to our self awareness. And yes, acceptance. I think you really hit on something about noticing more quickly when you were “in the courtroom “. What a great analogy I will carry that one with me. I too have been reading and finding useful the perspective of Buddhism’s focus on the breath, in this moment. Thank you for sharing and for all you have done all these years for so many musicians while it was your expression, it also was acknowledgment for us.

I pride myself on producing well-written dialogue, but you are a master at it. This piece was fluid, easy to read and described events/emotions that I suspect most readers our age can relate to. Sounds like you have a lot more energy than I do, and we're almost the same age. Thank you for sharing your craft.
