Trane and Sonny, this is a beautiful story, beautifully written. i just want to mention that as a 13/14 year old becoming a life of loving “jazz” i heard guys that i thought were “cool cats” say “melodius thunk” and didn’t understand the seeming dis-respect. still don’t but feel good that what my young ears thought was great, was, great. thanx, as always for what you do.
Superb, this is wonderful! And quite by chance, this morning I chose 'John S.' (code for John and Sonny) from The Bridge for this week's radio show. Also, my grandfather worked on the Williamsburg Bridge...
Yes, at 12 years old he ran away from a cruel stepmother and home on the lower east side, changed his name and started on construction sites as a water boy. That's him on the far right in the Lunch Atop a Skyscraper 1932 photo during the building of the Rockefeller Center.
That's interesting and sounds logical, but I don't think that's right. Certainly not according to Aiden Levy's biography 'Saxophone Colossus', but I'm always happy to stand corrected.
What you have done for me and so many others is beyond comparison. I'll never, and I mean NEVER, forget your supportive and important comments about my relationship with Michael Brecker!
Thanks Bret. This is something i.e. "beyond competition" that I taught during every semester of my teaching Jazz History classes at three universities over my long and wonderful teaching career. It was always one of my favorite days with the students to be able to share the respect and love of Trane and Sonny!
Beautiful ! 😻
Wonderful-should be required reading for every jazz musician, aspiring or established. Bravo.
Amen, brother Bret.

God bless Sonny and God bless ‘Trane 🥰

Your grandfather worked on the Williamsburg Bridge? That is a remarkable coincidence.

As far as I know, John S has always been for music critic John S Wilson..

I stand corrected..
I have the book (and know Adam) so many nuggets I knew not of - and yes, on page 328, there it is.
“Johnson” would have been better private code 😃
Thanks for setting me straight!
Thank you, and you're quite right, 'Johnson' would have been very apt!

You are a person that the world needs!!!!!!
