Hey Bret, I LOVE this video!!! Used to show it to my students. I showed it after I would show the scene from Sound of Music with Julie Andrews and the kids. Best of all, Elvin's hair looks like it's on fire!!!!

It was cold that night, so you can see their breaths.

I know, but my students loved the way Elvin looked.

The title should read 1965, not 1975, yes?

It was the beginning of Coltrane for me. Step 1. I was captivated, overwhelmed, like Hawaiian waves in the winter on the North Shore. Elvin Jones drumming caused me to think, I don’t even have a clue what he’s doing but I know it’s great. Then came Step 2, Love Supreme. Enough said.

Your writing always moves me!

Thank you.

Just picking nits, but I'm not sure that Coltrane is adjusting his reed. As you said, it was cold that night, and when he plays his first notes, his soprano is out of tune (he is flat), so he adjusts the mouthpiece on the neck. Even then, he is still pretty flat at the very beginning, but as his horn warms in the subsequent minutes, he locks in. I've had to do the same (sax player).

Huh! They didn't leave anything out. Trane's about to bust a kidney. Elvin's ready to take on the Persian army. I just watched the ENTIRE thing without once taking a breath. Ummm. What's ABOVE overtones? Some of those sounds seem to emanate from the back of Coltrane's head.
