Very good breakdown of a work that sort of defies it. At lunch one day with Bob Thiele, I asked him what it was like to be in the studio when Ascension was recorded. His reply? “Very loud.”
Oh, man. you’re the best. You put the words that make the music that since it was recorded (i was 13 then) was indescribable. That’s why i loved it. I couldn’t describe it but i felt it. It spoke to all of my emotions. I jumped, hooted, waved my arms and screeched. I don’t always react like that anymore, except in my head. You have the words and know how to use them. Not a critique, a word portrait.
I detect certain psychedelic influences in this sound. these guys are in banana land! They is WORKED UP! I hope no one had a hernia during the making of this recording. I haven't listened to this in forty years. I still remember it. What utter intense commitment.
I was living in a little town called Plainwell, Michigan. I lived above the bar where I played drum gigs with an organist. We lived like hoarders: disgusting beatniks! I got the Ascension album in the mail and put it on the Zenith record player. It was electrifying. One note: John Tchicai's solo remains one of the eeriest saxophone statements I've ever heard.
