If you read Monday’s post, you were probably expecting a follow-up on my experience with the Mexican judicial system. However, just when I thought that journey had ended, I received an email requesting my presence in court again, so I must postpone that story.
As I write this, I am beginning a month-long class in AI Video, where I'm learning to use new tools poised to revolutionize filmmaking. The course is going to be very intense, so I'll only be posting once a week this month.
Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Patrick Bartley, a remarkable young alto saxophonist now living in Tokyo who is known for his boundless versatility, virtuosic technique and expressive vocal-like sound. The next few posts will feature excerpts from that interview, along with performance clips. Getting to know Patrick and hearing him play will serve as an introduction to his music and his work on YouTube.
Today, he talks about how he got started on the alto saxophone and the spiritual component of his music. Following this, enjoy Wayne Shorter’s "Yes or No," live from the Blue Note in Tokyo, featuring Patrick and his occasional collaborator, Emmet Cohen on piano, Philip Norris on bass, and Kyle Poole on drums.
I woke up this morning and listened to this interview and this quartet’s playing . I’ve now been to church, temple, or a fusion of both through them. I had the privilege of meeting Patrick on the Jazz Cruise and a few times in Florida. He is the most remarkable person out there today in what he does and what he is. (I also love the EC Trio). Thanks so much for presenting him on this platform .
