I want to tell you when I got really sick and scared. When I became a paying subscriber to a few of the Substacker’s that I follow and got some gift subscriptions to give away. Cool, right? Then the “liberals” that I thought of as friends told me “No. Don’t send me anything from there. Don’t send me any of that stuff you read and talk about.” And that’s when the real danger hit me.
I agree, Bret. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Hone your BS detectors. Be alert for scapegoating of persons and institutions (labelled "elites" and "enemies within"). As I think your readers are. Speaking of Substackers, the April 19 Thinking About by Timothy Snyder about "The Next Terror Attack, And What Comes After" (snyder@substack.com) complements this essay with some history and critical analysis. Remember your study of propaganda from college composition.
A beautifully articulated call to arms, and damn it, it might just work! Boycotts, strikes, demonstrations, and defiance still can work in a system where we outnumber them a million to one. Without us, the oligarchs would not be, and with us, they can be put in check. Let them eat dreck!
