The bare living room in Germantown tells you more than any of the mythology does. Same with the four minute silences before he answered a question. He had clearly worked out early what he was not going to spend his attention on, and then spent sixty years not spending it.
He could always grab your attention and hold it for as long as he wanted. The consummate musical storyteller. Astonishing in depth and breadth of ideas he had. He played life. What more could you ask for? Thanks for bringing Sonny closer to us all these years Bret.
I remember as a 18 year old college kid hearing Newk play the Village Vanguard in 1969. The drinking age in NY was still 18 then and I bought my beer to nurse and heard the Saxophone Colossus for the first of many times. A memory which will stay with me for as long as I have memory.
