I'd like to add one of my favorites to these wonderful films you suggested and I've seen many times. John Huston's Treasure of Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, and Tim Holt. Like you wrote, Bret, I find something new every time a watch it. All over again, I feel paranoid like Fred C. Dobbs and as wizened as Howard as he forsakes the gold to help the Indios in the forest. And NOTHING beats the ending.

Just watched it again last week! On a double bill with Key Largo.

Great writing on great cinema. Sat with recollections of my teenage thoughts of these films. “Strangelove” brings up the darkest of my satirical thoughts, God bless the beauty of that mushroom cloud!

Masterful film writing -- thank you! You're right about that opening exposition. I'm going to check out "A Touch of Evil". I haven't seen any Welles since 1977.

"Whisky Fumes at Sunrise." I feel a song coming on. Obviously, Country.

Thanks Bret this essay makes me want to revisit 'Dr Strangelove' and watch for the first time the other two films which I had heard legend of but had not seen.
