My problem is that substack is quickly becoming just another part of the drug. The one, i think it's from "Brave New World", what you're describing. I'm dropping subscriptions and follows day by day. I'm hanging on to you, you're where i started. BTW, do you remember a guy from the city named Arnie Lawence?
I was walking back uptown to The Hotel Mayflower from the Village very early in the morning. As i came upon the arched entrance to Rizzoli Bookstore i heard the incredible sound of a saxophone playing “My Favorite Things”. I looked in and there was a guy, just playing, way, way too good. i looked, i listened , he never looked at me, never said a word. it happened on another occcasion. i learned from a Village Voice article who he was. i was listening to Brecker a couple of days ago and recalled the memory. i guessed you might know him. thanx
Wonderfully written, Bret. It reminds me of an old Star Trek: Next Generation episode called "The Game". The one where a "new game" was brought onto the Enterprise that addicted everyone who played it. https://images.app.goo.gl/szzGogh47Vcw8hZMA

I knew Arnie, and know his son Erik. Great musician. Spent his final days in Israel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kM9oCELqaSY&list=PLs6SrXGgvAbFeC5HPrtE7ST7Cu5Lz5kdF

Hi Bret,
For anyone interested, John Taylor Gatto, one of the pillars of modern homeschooling in America, also wrote “ Weapons of Mass Instruction”.
When he won the NY State Teacher of the Year award in 1991, the speech he delivered at the award ceremony became his book Dumbing Us Down.
As you can imagine, life changed after that….

P.S. I don’t think it was “needed” to mention that you were the insomniac.
Oh, iI just realized, duh, you can just click on the link with the code rather than attempting to enter it, so finally, I can leave a comment.
Yes, guilty as charged, and great reminder to stay vigilant!
