The man was humanly complicated, to be sure, but his instincts behind the horn were impeccable – & he proved an amazing mentor to so many younger talents along the way …
Kind of Blue still rings in my head as my favorite album. Went to see Miles once in San Francisco. A bunch of us had come from LA, well, Venice Beach, for the occasion. Miles walked out before the first set. I o.d. and saw flying Turkish carpets glide over the roof of the car we were in.
A brief chapter of a life thankfully left behind. But Kind of Blue and All Blues stay gratefully embedded in my brain.
The quintet prior to fusion Miles is second to none. On The Corner is another one with unwarranted backlash. Jazz is about new directions, and Miles was great at that and pulling it out of people.
Miles and Cicely once shared a limousine with another couple riding to an official event in Washington, D.C. The woman across from him asked what he had done to merit attending the ceremony. Miles answered, “Well, I changed music four of five times.”

Wonderful piece with the exception of overlooking On The Corner.

Great summary and commentary.
