The right always needs a boogeyman to rail against. The horrible “other”. Someone to scapegoat for your perceived problems. Mexico and Mexicans have always been an easy target. Every time I go to Mexico, someone here invariably says, “well be careful.” Why? You are more likely to be killed by your government here.

Sad but true.

La Verdad. Such a shame Americans are generally dismissive and ignorant of our ‘distant neighbor.’ Most don’t even know it by its proper name, the United States of Mexico.

Thanks Bret, you show a lot of attractive "what-ifs" for us Mexico dreamers!

Glad you are enjoying your newfound surroundings. The test of time is the best test of all.

I feel very very lucky to live here now. Only drawbacks, horrid Chinese food and no Deli.

Come to Cuenca. We have good Chinese, and sushi. And two or three really good delis. One has bagels 😉

Countries have borders, my heart and soul have none. Mexico has alot of soul and the people have love for each other and their indigenous people. The United States is a youth with an identity crisis as a result of creating and embracing so many lies. I have a great distain for the citizens of the U$ taking the supremacist attitude of claiming it as America though the continent goes from the Arctic to the Antartic and is home to many wonderful peoples.

Astute takes on a varied culture, punctuated, as usual by comical and delightful writing. I agree, having lived here 18 years, Mexico is so much more than the seriotypic version the USA teaches us, partly, to let itself off the hook by diversion.

I can't wait to visit Guanajuato in October for the festival. Thanks so much for this, Bret.

So true. Thank you for capturing The Spirit of Guanajuato.

Your love for Mexico is what shows here, Bret. You REALLY love it and I'm wondering if you have an in law unit for rent where I could bring my small dog. You can WRITE, amigo, and for me to say that is something cuz i can write too!

We have a Casita that we’re fixing up, but that won’t be ready for a couple of years.

Sound like the correct time line. Furnished or unfurnished? Can I have pet lions?

Bret Primack's avatar

Had no idea you have a pet lion,.
